Gordon Brown and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon press conference and photocall; ENGLAND: London: Downing Street: INT **some flash photography** Prime minister Gordon Brown and United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon into room / Gordon Brown (Prime minister) press statement SOT - Ladies and Gentlemen, I am delighted to have had the opportunity today to meet the UN Secretary General Ban / We have had extremely productive discussions / I enjoyed resuming my conversations with him, which started in No 11 Downing Street a few months ago, and we have been able to discuss all the issues that affect the international community over the next few months - And I wanted to thank him for the work that he is doing and to say that the United Kingdom will always be a strong supporter of the United Nations, it will continue to be at the heart of our foreign policy for the years to come, and we did discuss a number of priorities, not just for the coming few weeks but for the coming period - The first was that we must intensify our efforts on Darfur / It is one of the urgent areas for action in the next few months / We discussed how the United Nations and African Union can prepare for peace talks - I told the Secretary General he could rely on our support to find a lasting solution / We discussed the deployment of an African Union and UN peace keeping force / Of course resolutions will go down at some point to the Security Council to find a mandate and to set out a way forward / We will continue to watch this with vigilance, we are ready to engage with Sudan as long as it cooperates, we are ready to take action to protect the people of Darfur if it does not - The second area that we discussed was the world trade negotiations and of course we wish them to proceed as quickly as possible to a successful conclusion / We also discussed how there should be a new drive to meet the Millennium Development Goals / These are the goals for 2015 on education, healthcare and pov...
