It can become pathogenic in some situations, such as when a person is immunocompromised, or a course of antibiotics have killed bacteria that keep its growth in check. Pathogenic growth is called candidiasis, or thrush. Commonly affected areas include the mouth and vagina. Although the yeast usually exists as single cells, it can form filamentous hyphae (yellow), particularly when invading tissues
