Hurricane Gustav - stock photo

This photo-like image of Hurricane Gustav was acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite on August 31, 2008, at 11:45 local time (16:45 UTC). By this time, Gustav's day of super-hurricane status was over as the storm had reduced in intensity to Category Three strength. Peak sustained winds were around 185 km/hr (115 mph), and storm surge from the whipping winds had brought sea levels as much as 4 meters (12 feet) above normal, according to the National Hurricane Center. However, the storm did not appear well-formed in this satellite image, with no strong eye obvious in the imagery, and without the strong spiral structure typical of the strongest hurricanes.
