CERVIX, STRATIFIED SQUAMOUS EPITHELIUM, MICROSCOPIC ANATOMY (or HISTOLOGY), Human, 150X. This epithelium consists of many layers (or strata) of cells, with a flattening of the cells and nuclei as you approach the surface. The flattened cells are squamous and slough off of the surface--new cells are constantly being produced by mitosis in the basal layer of this epithelium to replace lost cells. This epithelium forms a protective layer for the cervix. The underlying supportive connective tissue is very light. The Pap Smear is commonly used to detect cervical cancer
