Fireman Gives Smokey the Bear a Helmet
(Original Caption) 10/3/50-Washington, D.C.- "Smokey", the bear you see on fire prevention posters, becomes an honorary member of the Washington Fire Departmentas he is presented with a helmet by deputy fire chief M.H. Sutton, who is cautious with the presentation because "Smokey" was feeling a little rambunctious. The bear was found orphaned and burned by a forest fire in New Mexico last June. He will play a role in Fire Prevention Week, October 8th to 14th.
