Early Heart and Lung Machine

(Original Caption) A view of the new heart and lung machine constructed at the surgery of famed surgeon Clarence Craford at the Sabbatsberg Hospital in Stockholm. The machine will make possible operations for certain heart diseases heretofore regarded as impossible. This is how the machine works. From the body of the patient the blood in conducted to the left part of the machine, where oxygen which has passed through a ceramic filter is pressed into the blood. Eventual foam formation is excluded by an "anti-foam formator." The blood passes on to a closed tray with rotary cylinders of plastic where it is freed from carbonic acid. Here, too, narcosis is induced with nitrous oxide. After the blood has been oxygenated in the "lung" it continues to the "heart" via a regulator which controls the machine according to the needs of the body. A "thrombosis-trap" prevents clots formin
