The Unknown Soldier cemetery, behind monument in Kolwezi on May 7, 2018. - The monument was erected by the late Congolese President Mobutu to commemorate soldiers of all nations who fought and perished in the historical battle of Kolwezi in May 1978 where French and Belgian paratroopers battled agains the local Katanga rebellion during the 2nd War of Shaba. On May 19, 1978, French soldiers parachuted into the Democratic Republic of Congo town of Kolwezi to rescue hundreds of Europeans held by rebels who had already massacred several.
