The former Commander in chief of the Allied forces
PARIS, FRANCE: The former Commander in chief of the Allied forces in Europe (1943) and the future US President General Dwight David "Ike" Eisenhower (1890-1969) poses for a photographer in 1951 at NATO Paris headquarters. In 1950, Eisenhower was made supreme commander of the Combined Land Forces in NATO, and in 1952 the popularity which he had gained in Europe swept him to victory in the US presidential elections, standing as a Republican. He was re-elected in 1956. (Photo credit should read AFP via Getty Images)
