Sago Street Market Chinatown

Sago Street market enjoys a final few weeks of authentic living heritage in Singapore's bustling Chinatown before falling victim to urban renewal, 12 July 1983. By September 1983, Chinatown's 100,000 residents – traders, craftsmen and hawkers – are relocated to end overcrowding. Many are resettled into the high-rise Kreta Ayer Complex seen towering over the market. Renamed the Chinatown Complex in 1984, Kreta Ayer houses residential units, a wet market, food centre and retail shops. (Photo by Alex Bowie/Getty Images)
