Rwandan government troops pull back from the frontline on June 12, 1994 in Mushubuti, 10 km northwest of Gitarama, as Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) rebels advance on them and make gains on the ground in the Rwandan war, which has already claimed 500,000 lives. On April 6, 1994, the death of the Presidents of Burundi and Rwanda in a plane crash caused by a rocket attack, triggered several weeks of systematic and large-scale massacres targeting the Tutsi population and moderate Hutus in Rwanda.
