BUCHAREST, ROMANIA: Romanian woman holds her passport and an application form to work in Britain as she waits in the front of the British embassy 31 March 2004, in Bucharest. Britain put all applications from would-be immigrants from Bulgaria and Romania on hold 30 March as it urgently investigated allegations that many of them might in fact be bogus. Bulgaria and Romania are both negotiating with Brussels to join the European Union, but lag behind 10 candidate countries which will be ushered into the bloc upon its enlargement on May 1.
