JALDAPARA, INDIA: A python hatches its eggs in a hole of an uprooted tree in the woodland at the Jaldapara Wild Life Sanctuary, some 800 kms north-east of Calcutta, 27 April 2005. The area, located at the foothills of the eastern Himalayas in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, a major tourist attraction with vast grasslands, was declared a sanctuary in 1943 for the protection of its great variety of flora and fauna. The Jaldapara Sanctuary has the largest population of rhinoceros in India after the Kajiranga National Park in Assam, and hosts wild elephants, Indian bisons, leopards, spotted deers and hog deers.
