C S Rolls arresting the motor racing driver J Moore-Brabazon, c 1900.
UNITED KINGDOM - SEPTEMBER 28: Photograph taken from an album of prints collected by English motorist, motor car manufacturer and aviator Charles Stewart Rolls (1877-1910), showing Rolls, dressed in a policemans uniform. Rolls was a keen driver and was well known in the motoring world after taking part in many races of the time, including the famous 1000 Mile Trial (1900) and the 15,000 Mile Trial (1907). He founded Rolls-Royce Ltd with Sir Frederick Henry Royce (1863-1933) in 1906, creating one of the world's most famous marques. John Moore-Brabazon (1884-1964) was, like Rolls, a pioneer aviator and racing driver. He made the first authenticated powered flight in Britain on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent, in 1909, and he was the first person to be issued with a pilots licence in Britain.
