Hansom cab, c 1900.

UNITED KINGDOM - MAY 09: Model. This hackney vehicle was popular from the 19th century until the motor cab superseded it during the period from 1905 to 1912. It was a closed two-wheeled carriage drawn by a single horse. The interior seat faced forward for two passengers and the driver sat outside on a high seat behind the body of the cab. Even though the cab originally invented by Joseph Hansom in 1834 was rather different to this one, the name Hansom was still applied to it. This model is of a privately owned cab, and is based on one owned by Lord Rosebery. (Photo by SSPL/Getty Images)
