India Prepares To Host G20 In Kashmir
SRINAGAR, KASHMIR, INDIA - MAY 21: Indian paramilitary troopers patrol the city center ahead of the G20 summit on May 21, 2023 in Srinagar, Indian administered Kashmir, India. The Group of Twenty (G20) is the premier forum for economic cooperation worldwide. All major international economic issues are influenced and strengthened by it. On May 22-24, the Kashmir Valley will host the third G20 tourism working group meeting under India's presidency. After the India revoked Indian-administered Kashmir's special autonomy status in August of 2019, the meeting will be the first major international event in the disputed region since then. By hosting the meeting in Srinagar, India is likely highlighting its rich geographic diversity. From 1 December 2022 to 30 November 2023, India will hold the G20 Presidency. The UN expert said that "massive human rights violations" have been reported in Jammu and Kashmir since the Union Territory came under the direct rule of the Centre in August 2019. "These included torture, extrajudicial killings, denial of political participation rights of Kashmiri Muslims and minorities," he said. Meanwhile, the Permanent Mission of India in Geneva rejected Fernand de Varennes' statement as "baseless and unwarranted". (Photo by Yawar Nazir/Getty Images)
