WWII USS Houston (CA-30) survivor David Flynn (left) places a memorial wreath with the help of his son, Shawn Flynn during the 70th anniversary of the warship's final 1942 battle off the coast of Java, annual memorial service at Sam Houston Park, Saturday, March 3, 2012, in Houston.
During the service, representatives of Britain, The Kingdom of the Netherlands, Australia, and the U.S., whose naval forces banded together in early 1942 in an ill-fated attempt to defend Java (Indonesia) from Japanese invasion, will remember the American sailors and Marines of USS Houston (CA-30) and Australian sailors of HMAS Perth who perished in battle, or later, as POWS of the Japanese.
