As Iran's football team prepares for the World Cup, they will be hoping for more success than Friedrichshafen's most famous product -- the ill-fated Zeppelin airship. Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin tested the first craft on Friedrichshafen's Lake Constance, wowing spectators in 1900 as his 420-foot (128-metre) propeller-powered blimp rose above the waters from a floating hangar. His success heralded a 'Golden Age' of airship travel in the 1930s, but the era ended on May 6, 1937 when the mighty Hindenburg, a hydrogen-filled behemoth measuring a staggering 245 metres, burst into a spectacular inferno killing 35 of its 97 passengers at Lakehurst, New Jersey.
