Cultivator Mary Attab grounds the part of sorghum that she could saved from her land damaged due to the dry spell, on October 12, 2016 in Aweil.
More than 50% of the cultivation has been lost in the area due to dry spells, floods and plant deseases. Since March 2016, more than 70,000 people from Northen Bahr al Ghazal migrated to the neighbouring country Sudan due to the lack of food and the inflation in the market. According to the Food Security Outlook Update released by Famine Early Warning System Network (Fews Net) in September, in Northern Bahr el Ghazal, some households are in Catastrophe phase level (IPC Phase 5), as they suffer from extreme lack of food, with households facing significant food consumption gaps, high levels of malnutrition and mortality. / AFP / Albert Gonzalez Farran - AFP / Albert Gonzalez Farran (Photo credit should read ALBERT GONZALEZ FARRAN/AFP via Getty Images)
