A column of German prisonners march in an empty street of Germany on October 1, 1918. The Great War started in 1914 with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and was ended with an armistice between the Allied powers and defeated Germany on November 11, 1918. Over 60 million European soldiers were mobilized from 1914 to 1918 and some 20 million military and civilian deaths resulted.
