Christopher Columbus arriving in the New World, 1492 (1817-1826). Genoese explorer and navigator Columbus (1451-1506) presenting gifts to the first natives to greet him on his landing in America. Sponsored by Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, Columbus set out to discover a westward route to Asia. He landed on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, claiming it for Spain.
