The sombre film about the Nanjing massacre over seventy years ago, which tells the story of the occupation of Nanjing by Japanese troops in 1937 who carried out a massacre over the following six weeks, has become a box-office hit in China. Known as "Nanjing, Nanjing" in Chinese, the 38-year-old director spent four years making the film, with two years spent researching history books, letters and diaries of Japanese soldiers, Japanese military video archives, and the recollections of Chinese and western survivors.
