UNITED KINGDOM - SEPTEMBER 01: Blenkinsop's rack locomotive, 1812. Model (scale 1:8). The locomotive represented here was designed by John Blenkinsop (1783-1831). Blenkinsop worked at Middleton collieries near Leeds and devised a rack and pinion system. This consisted of a cogwheel on the locomotive which locked into special teeth in a rack on one side of the rail. This was particularly successful in mountain railways. Left side view.
