Reading While Horizontal

US Air Force flight nurse, First Lieutenant Lorraine Clare Schoen of the USAFR, 65th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, uses prismatic glasses to read a magazine, while remaining horizontal during NASA tests to help set medical standards for female candidates for flight on the Space Shuttle, at Ames Research Center at Moffett Federal Airfield in Silicon Valley, California, 1973. Schoen was one of eight nurses, who had two weeks of total bedrest, remaining horizontal at all times, as part of a weightlessness simulation, while four others acting as controls were allowed to stand and walk as usual. The nurses also underwent acceleration tests on a centrifuge, as well as cardiovascular and endocrine testing, while their biorhythms, body chemistry and circadian changes in body temperature were electronically monitored using specially developed instruments.
