(Original Caption) Portrait of Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900), the famous German philosopher, as a soldier in the Prussian army. Nietzsche served as a "one-year volunteer" in a cavalry regiment. He was an enthusiastic soldier and was very unhappy when a riding accident compelled him to quit his military duty. Rare photograph taken in 1864.
